Today MG is SAIC's principal export brand, with a range built around compact and subcompact crossovers and sedans: the MG ZS, MG HS, MG RX5 and MG5. Several of these share architecture and components with SAIC's domestic Roewe models, and battery-electric derivatives such as the ZS EV sit alongside the petrol versions in many markets.
The Roewe relationship is the practical point for parts buyers. Where an MG model has a Roewe equivalent, chassis, brake and suspension components are often shared, which widens the pool of available parts — but the correspondence has to be verified by part number, not assumed from the resemblance. Cross-referencing matters because a single model line rarely uses a single part. Over a production run a manufacturer will change suppliers, revise a design mid-life, fit larger brakes to a heavier or higher-output variant, and build market-specific versions with different lighting, sensors and emissions equipment. Two vehicles that look identical in a showroom photograph can therefore take different parts. The model name narrows the search; the OEM number closes it.
The VIN is the 17-character vehicle identification number stamped on the chassis and shown on the registration document, usually visible through the base of the windscreen and on a plate in the door aperture. It encodes the manufacturer, the model, the body and engine variant and the production sequence, which is why it resolves fitment questions that a model name cannot. At minimum the VIN and the part you need. Ideally also the model year, the engine code, the transmission type, whether the vehicle is left- or right-hand drive, and a photograph of the old part showing any number printed on it. That combination is usually enough to identify an exact part rather than a probable one.
Look for a moulded, stamped or printed alphanumeric string on the body of the component or on a label attached to it. Ignore date codes and casting marks, which are usually shorter and often include a recognisable date. Photograph the whole component as well as the number — context helps identify which of several similar numbers is the part number.
