The starter is a high-current DC motor with a solenoid that both throws the pinion into the flywheel ring gear and closes the main contacts. Vehicles with stop-start systems use reinforced or tandem-solenoid starters rated for far more cycles than a conventional unit.
Symptoms that usually point to it on a vehicle like the Great Wall Jolion:
Confirm the battery, battery terminals and engine earth strap first β corrosion and a weak battery imitate starter failure and are far cheaper to fix. When ordering, give the power rating in kilowatts, the pinion tooth count, rotation direction, mounting bolt pattern and the number of mounting ears, and state whether the vehicle has stop-start.
Fitment is confirmed from the VIN and from the number on the part being replaced, not from the model name alone: engine variant, trim, market specification and mid-life revisions all change part numbers within the same model year. Send the VIN, the model year, the transmission type, whether the vehicle is left- or right-hand drive, and a photograph of the old part showing any number printed on it.
