A brake pad is friction material bonded or riveted to a steel backing plate. The caliper piston presses the pads against the rotating disc, converting the vehicle's momentum into heat. Pads are consumable by design and are the most frequently replaced item on the braking system.
Symptoms that usually point to it on a vehicle like the BYD Song Plus:
- A high-pitched squeal that appears under light braking and disappears when you brake hard — usually the mechanical wear indicator touching the disc.
- A harsh grinding noise: the friction material is gone and the backing plate is cutting the disc. At this point the discs almost always need replacing too.
- Longer pedal travel, or a pedal that feels soft before it bites.
Ordering this part
Specify the axle (front or rear), the disc diameter the caliper is sized for, whether the pads carry an electrical wear sensor, and the caliper manufacturer if it is cast into the body. Pads are always replaced as a complete axle set, never per wheel.
Fitment is confirmed from the VIN and from the number on the part being replaced, not from the model name alone: engine variant, trim, market specification and mid-life revisions all change part numbers within the same model year. Send the VIN, the model year, the transmission type, whether the vehicle is left- or right-hand drive, and a photograph of the old part showing any number printed on it.
